Ordersmith for Shopify

Checkout and after-purchase tools in one app, starting with drop-off points: customers collect their parcel from a locker or shop near them, and can edit their order after placing it, with the shipping rules, checks and automation to run it day to day.

Checkout

Pick a point, on any Shopify plan

Customers choose a nearby InPost locker or shop while they check out. How it appears depends on the store's plan, and both can run side by side.

Map picker (Shopify Plus)

Choosing a drop-off rate opens a map and list of the nearest points under it, with branded pins.

  • Search by postcode, town, street or place
  • The map zooms to show at least the five closest points
  • The shipping address can update in real time to the point's address as it's picked
  • A reminder to enter a separate billing address
  • Works with Apple Pay and Google Pay in checkout

Point-by-point rates (every plan)

The nearest points appear as their own shipping rates, such as "InPost - One Stop, 0.8 miles". This works without Shopify Plus, including with Apple Pay and Google Pay.

  • Choose how many points to show, the price and a free-over threshold
  • Rate name and description templates
  • Delivery estimates in working days
  • The same points throughout an Apple Pay or Google Pay payment sheet, so the chosen rate is still there at payment

A point is always chosen

Where the map picker is shown, a checkout rule stops the order being paid without a point. Every point is checked with the carrier before it's saved, so closed lockers can't be picked.

Express checkouts and every plan

"Buy with Apple Pay" or Google Pay on a product page skips the checkout page, and stores without Shopify Plus can't show the map there. Customers can still choose the drop-off rate and pay: the app assigns the point nearest their address moments later.

  • The order confirmation email says a point is being chosen, with a link to see it
  • The thank-you and order status pages show the point, with a button to pick a different one
  • The order is held while they can change it
  • Orders are tagged, so staff can see which points were assigned

Optional banner

Stores can show their own banner, or the default Ordersmith one, above the map.

Google Maps or a free map

Stores with a Google Maps key get an interactive map. Without one, a free OpenStreetMap map is used automatically, so no key or Google account is needed.

  • Numbered pins that match the list of points, with the chosen one in black
  • Free place search by UK postcode, postcode area such as TF11, or town
  • Works in checkout, on the thank-you and order status pages, and in the basket

After purchase

Change your mind, within a window

For a time the merchant sets, customers can switch to a different point or edit their order themselves, from the thank-you and order status pages. Fewer "can you change my order" emails, and nothing ships before they've finished.

Thank-you and order status pages

The chosen point is shown with its address, opening hours and directions, with a button to change it while the window is open. Where the app assigned the point, the page says so, so customers know where their parcel is going.

Change window in minutes

From a few minutes to 30 days, or switched off. Changes stop as soon as anything is fulfilled.

Fulfilment hold

Orders can be put on hold until the window closes, then released automatically, so nothing ships to the wrong place or before an edit.

  • Placed first, before anything else, normally within a couple of seconds of Shopify announcing the order
  • Warehouse systems and 3PLs that read Shopify's fulfilment orders wait until it's released
  • Guidance in the app for systems that import orders on a schedule
  • Or placed by a Shopify Flow workflow, so it still happens if the app is unavailable

Customers edit their own order

  • Remove items or lower quantities, refunded automatically to the original payment method
  • Swap an item for a different size, colour or option
  • Add more items, paying the difference
  • Change the delivery address
  • Switch from home delivery to a drop-off point, or from a point to home, choosing a delivery option
  • Cancel the whole order, with a full refund and the stock put back

Priced before it's saved

Every change is priced again first: the shipping rates for the new basket and address, the store's shipping rules, free delivery thresholds and discount code minimums. If the basket drops below free delivery, the shipping comes off the refund.

Pay for changes that cost more

Faster delivery or a dearer option? Customers confirm the change and pay the difference on Shopify's secure payment page for their order, which shows exactly what changed.

  • The order stays on hold until it's paid, then is released automatically
  • An invoice email with a payment link as a backup
  • The merchant is told if it's still unpaid after a set time
  • An optional limit on how much can be added

Clear confirmation

A "Check your changes" pop-up shows each change, and any refund or amount to pay, before anything is updated, so customers know exactly what will happen.

The merchant stays in control

  • Choose which changes are allowed, and tags that block editing
  • Every edit is noted on the order timeline and tagged
  • A list of recent edits, refunds and payments, with an email if a refund ever fails

Orders

Ready for fulfilment

Every drop-off order carries the point in the places fulfilment tools and label software look.

Saved four ways

  • Tag, e.g. dropoff:GB_UK00392970
  • Note attributes: point ID, name, carrier and address
  • Metafields: the full point and its ID alone
  • Optionally, the shipping address itself: on Shopify Plus it updates in real time at checkout to the point's address as soon as a point is picked, so the thank-you page and confirmation email show it too. When items ship as separate parcels, it only changes if every parcel is going to the point

Confirmation emails

A ready-made snippet shows the point as the delivery address in Shopify's order confirmation email, including Apple Pay and Google Pay orders. For orders where the point is being assigned, it says so and links to the order page to see or change it.

Kept up to date

Every change, by the customer or staff, updates the tag, attributes, metafields and address, and is logged.

InPost tracking

Every scan, on the order

InPost isn't a carrier Shopify tracks by itself, so the app follows each parcel and adds InPost's scans to the order. Merchants see them on the order timeline, and customers on their order status page.

Automatic

Parcels are picked up as soon as they're fulfilled with InPost as the carrier or an InPost tracking number, including when a warehouse system sends the fulfilment. A daily sweep catches any missed.

The whole journey

  • Ready for dispatch and picked up by InPost
  • Arrived at and left each depot
  • Out for delivery
  • Delivered to the locker, ready to collect
  • Collected, which marks the order delivered

Clear for customers

Scans are shown in plain wording, such as "Arrived at Wrexham Service Centre", with the correct UK times.

Checks every 4 hours

Each parcel is checked until it's collected, or has had no new scans for seven days. Parcels are checked in batches, so it stays light on InPost's service.

Tracking page

Every parcel with its latest scan and next check, plus Check now, Stop, and Force tracking to keep following a parcel past the seven days. Parcels can also be added by order number.

Admin tools

For the team

Choose a point from the admin

A Choose drop-off point action on order and draft order pages. Useful for replacement orders.

  • The customer's recent points, one click to reuse
  • Points that have since closed are flagged
  • Search any postcode or place

Test mode

Hide the drop-off rates from everyone except a test name, at checkout and in the basket, while setting up.

Setup checklist

Step-by-step setup in the app, with one-click links to add the basket blocks to the theme.

Shipping rules

Hide, show and order shipping rates

Rules apply to every checkout, including Apple Pay and Google Pay, and to the basket estimate.

Conditions

  • Basket total, item count and weight
  • Product tags, types and vendors
  • Shipping country
  • Postcode lists with wildcards, e.g. B13*, TF11 9PG, TF12*

Matching rates

Match rate names by "contains" or "is exactly", and combine conditions with all or any.

Rate order

Force rates to the top or the bottom and arrange them in order. The cheapest rate always stays first, as Shopify requires.

Mobile number check

So the carrier can text the customer

Landlines are blocked at checkout with a clear message. InPost orders get their own wording, as the number is how the parcel appears in the InPost app.

How it checks

  • With or without the country code, spaces or brackets
  • Check every order, only drop-off orders, drop-off orders plus chosen rates, or only chosen rates
  • Checked when the customer pays, so Apple Pay and Google Pay sheets aren't interrupted
  • Passes if either the shipping or the contact phone is a mobile
  • Numbers from other countries are left alone

Basket

Shipping options before checkout

Customers enter their postcode in the basket and see the delivery options and prices they'll get at checkout, with the same rules applied.

Cart page and cart drawer

A block for the cart page and an embed for the cart drawer, which works with Dawn and most themes. Rates refresh as the basket changes.

Map of nearby points

When a drop-off rate is offered, a small map shows the closest points. Tap a pin for the address and distance. Without a Google key, the free map shows numbered pins and a matching list.

Theme editor settings

Headings, text, collapsed or open, delivery days, the map and a custom banner are all set in the theme editor.

Shopify Flow

Triggers for your workflows

Each trigger includes the order (where there is one), so workflows can also use the customer, items and tags. For example: email the warehouse when a point changes, or send the order to a 3PL when the change window closes.

TriggerWhen it firesData available
Drop-off point changed The customer changes their point on the thank-you or order status page, or staff change it in the admin. Order, previous point ID and name, new point ID, name and address, carrier, changed by (customer or staff), changed from (page)
Drop-off order created An order is placed with a drop-off point, once the point has been added to the order. Order, point ID, name and address, carrier, point verified, change window ends
Drop-off change window closed The customer can no longer change their point, so the order is ready to ship. Order, point ID and name, carrier, point changed during the window
Order edited by customer A customer changes their order on the thank-you or order status page. Order, items changed, delivery change, refund amount and status, edited from (page)
Order edit awaiting payment A customer's change cost more and is still unpaid after the time the merchant sets. Order, amount due, payment link, hours waiting
Drop-off carrier status changed A carrier's point finder stops responding, or starts working again. Carrier, status (up or down), drop-off rates hidden, error

Carriers

InPost today, more to come

InPost

InPost lockers and shops across the UK, with opening hours and directions. Two InPost connections are available; a store uses one at a time.

Only working points

Only points that are open and accept parcel collection are offered, and each choice is re-checked when it's saved.

Built for more

Each carrier is a separate connection, so more UK pick-up networks can be added.

Status & alerts

Know what's happening, without checking

A Status page in the app shows how everything is running for the store, and email alerts mean merchants hear about problems before their customers do.

Status page

  • Each carrier: working or down, since when, and why
  • Whether drop-off rates are currently hidden at checkout
  • Orders waiting or failed, with a one-click retry
  • Backups and background services
  • Recent events from the last 30 days

Outage alerts by email

An email when a carrier stops responding and again when it recovers, and if an order can't be processed. At most one email an hour for the same problem, so a flapping carrier never floods an inbox.

Release notes by email

A short summary of what's changed after each update, also shown under "What's new" in the app.

Simple to manage

Up to three addresses, separate switches for alerts and release notes, a test email button, and a one-click unsubscribe link in every email.

Reliability

Designed for when things go wrong

Checkout is the one place a store can't afford problems, so the app is built to keep checkout working and orders correct even when something else fails.

Carrier outages

Short timeouts with a quick retry. If a carrier stops responding, drop-off rates are hidden at checkout and in the basket within about a minute, and come back automatically once it recovers.

Clear messages

Customers are told when points are temporarily unavailable and asked to choose another delivery option, never a misleading "no points nearby".

Busy periods

New orders go through a queue that works at the pace Shopify allows, waits and retries when asked to slow down, and catches up after a flash sale instead of dropping anything.

  • Holds have their own fast lane, so they go on quickly even during a backlog
  • Scales up automatically as orders build up, and each store runs as fast as its Shopify plan allows
  • One busy store can't hold up everyone else's orders

Efficient by design

Each order needs only a handful of Shopify calls, and point searches are shared between nearby customers, so stores stay well within their limits.

Continuous backups

Every change is copied off the server within seconds, with seven days of history to restore from, and the restore has been tested.

Holds that don't depend on the app

The fulfilment hold can be placed by a Shopify Flow workflow inside Shopify, so it still happens if the app is briefly unavailable. Only that hold is released; fraud and other holds stay.

Self-healing and monitored

Health checks cover the service, database, carriers and order processing. The app restarts itself after database problems, and outside monitoring raises an alert within minutes.

  • Error monitoring on the app's server
  • Alerts if the order queue starts to back up, before customers notice

Store access kept secret

The keys that let the app work with a store, and any carrier login details, are encrypted before they're saved, backups included. Shopify's keys also expire after about an hour and renew automatically.

  • Keys can be changed at any time without merchants doing anything
  • Everything is removed when a store uninstalls the app
